Many students find the timing of the Integrated Reasoning section challenging. You can only move forward through the section, so you cannot peek ahead at all the items and decide which ones you will give the most attention.
Because the questions are of such varied format and content, there are no rules of thumb for timing by item type. One student might solve a Two-Part Analysis question that hinges on a math formula in under a minute but need several minutes to read through a Two-Part Analysis question that requires understanding an argument; another student might experience the opposite timing.
Through practice, however, you will be able to determine your personal timing for these questions and then, on Test Day, pace yourself confidently. The chapter on Integrated Reasoning in this book will introduce you to each IR question type and walk you through several examples of each. Your job is to analyze the logic of the argument, identifying its weaknesses and suggesting evidence that would improve it.
Planning your essay before you begin writing, as explained in the chapter on the Analytical Writing Assessment in this book, will allow you to write a solid essay within the time allowed. The most important score on the GMAT is the total score, which ranges from to Schools primarily look at this number. Over two-thirds of all GMAT test takers score within points of the approximate mean, which is about Pulling yourself out of that cluster is an important part of distinguishing your application.
The total score is calculated from scaled scores from the Quantitative section and Verbal section. These scores are meant to provide a timeless, absolute measure of skill. For example, a Quant score of 40 in represents the same level of ability as does a Quant score of 40 in Quant performance has gone up, and Verbal performance has gone down. While Verbal section scores still follow a fairly even distribution, Quantitative scaled scores now skew high. Thus, percentiles have shifted.
Schools view your percentile performance which is the same thing as a percent ranking overall and on each section of the GMAT.
The relationship between the section percentiles and the overall percentile is not simple. How can my overall score be 87th percentile? An example shows how this works.
Imagine that of students taking the test, 50 people got a 51 Quant and an 11 Verbal, while the other 50 people got an 11 Quant and a 51 Verbal. You take the same test and get 40 Quant and 40 Verbal.
However, your total score would put you higher than anyone else on the test—99th percentile. The first is that your overall score is about balanced performance on the two sections. Generally, you will not win on the GMAT by nailing one section and hoping your performance will overcome a deficit on the other. The second key point is that admissions officers often look at Quant and Verbal percentiles separately and may reject a candidate who does not meet a certain threshold for either subscore.
This is especially true for Quantitative percentiles, particularly at programs with a strong analytical focus. The magic number this time is 6, as this is the score at which you beat the median. At the same time, an exceptional — score will do more for your application than will an exceptional IR score, so you should prioritize your study time accordingly. The 1—8 score is derived from 12 items, nearly all of which have multiple parts, and there is no partial credit.
However, despite not being adaptive, the Integrated Reasoning section does not let test takers skip questions or return to previously answered questions. Your AWA score will be a number from 1 to 6 in increments of 0. The magic number here is 4.
Although you should strive for the best score possible, an essay graded 4 is considered satisfactory according to the grading rubric, while an essay graded 3 is not. Percentiles give a different perspective on the AWA. An AWA score of 4 ranks at a only the 18th percentile. To break the median, you have to score a 5.
A few experimental questions will be scattered throughout the Quantitative, Verbal, and Integrated Reasoning sections. The test maker is evaluating these questions for possible use on future tests. To get good data, the test maker has to test each question against the whole range of test takers—that is, high and low scorers. Therefore, on the adaptive Quantitative or Verbal sections, you could be on your way to an and getting tougher and tougher questions—and suddenly come across a question that seems pretty easy.
The test will take care of itself. You take care of yourself and focus on doing your best on the question in front of you.
Within a few weeks after your test date, your official score report, including your AWA score, will be available online. Here are some strategies. The good news is that they all work! Most test takers experience no problems. We suggest that you use a dry-erase board or anything with a similar surface and a nonpermanent marker while taking the practice tests.
Use your scratchwork to organize your thinking. To facilitate eliminating choices, especially on the Verbal section and for Data Sufficiency questions on the Quant section, draw an answer choice grid and cross off choices as you rule them out.
The administrator will give you a notepad to use. This is a spiral-bound booklet of five sheets of legal-sized or A4 laminated paper. You can write on the front and back of the sheets. You will not be given materials to erase the pen. The administrator will replace your used notepad with a clean one upon request. Many students find a single notepad provides more than enough space for all their scratchwork for the entire test. You may not remove the notepad from the test room during or after the exam.
If your pen does begin to dry out, or leak, you can request a new one. Hold the pen up as you raise your hand for assistance so the proctor knows what you need and can bring it to you right away. Say you make a mistake during a calculation or you smudge your work with your hand.
So what should you do? Just start over. Starting fresh will take much less time than trying to rescue a lost cause. You may use your own portable dry-erase whiteboard and marker or use the provided onscreen whiteboard, or use both recommended. Your own whiteboard may be a maximum of 12 by 20 inches 30 by 50 centimeters. You may have two dry-erase markers and an eraser with you.

But you should have in mind how much time to spend on each type of question, on average, and have a good sense of whether you are ahead, behind, or on pace in the section.
If I spend just a little longer, I might be able to get this! However, the opportunity cost of not having enough time for questions toward the end of the section is simply too high. Being willing to guess on questions becomes easier as you become more confident in your ability.
For now, rest assured that most top scorers on the GMAT make some strategic guesses as they go through the test. The test is designed to challenge everyone who takes it. The GMAT is offered by appointment, at your convenience, almost every day of the year.
You will be required to register online before making an appointment. Consider whether taking the test at home or in a test center will be more convenient and comfortable for you. Perhaps not having to travel to a test center would be a significant benefit for you. Just do what will work best for you. Test appointment slots are available around the clock for an online administration and nearly every day of the year at a test center. If you want to take the test at a center, make sure to register at least a few weeks in advance, since the more popular slots e.
You are allowed to retake the exam either way; you may retake an online administration once, and you may take the test five times in a rolling month period if you do so at a test center.
Available time slots change continuously as people register for the test. You will find out what times are available for an online administration or at your chosen testing center when you register. Admissions deadlines for business schools vary. The easiest way to register and schedule your appointment is to do so online. Start by going to mba. When scheduling your test appointment, be sure that the spelling of your name and your stated date of birth match the ID you will present before your test. If those do not match, you will not be permitted to take the test, and your test fee will be forfeited. You should arrive at the testing center or log in to your device 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
Whether you are taking the exam at a center or online, you will have to complete a number of security measures before you will be allowed to take the exam. A late arrival may result in not being allowed to take the test and forfeiting your test fee.
In some countries, even if you are a citizen, a passport is required. Visit mba. The ID must be current not expired and legible, and it should contain all four of the elements listed below. If you do not have one ID with all four of these elements, you will need to bring a second ID also from the list above that shows the missing elements.
Your name in the Roman alphabet. It must be exactly the same as what you provided when you made your appointment, including the order and placement of the names. Your date of birth. The date of birth must also exactly match the date provided when you made your appointment. If these elements do not match what the test administrator has on file for you, you will not be allowed to take the GMAT, and your test fee will be forfeited.
Before you schedule your test appointment, make sure you understand all the requirements that are particular to your situation and have acquired or renewed the ID you will use. Also, note that if your ID is found to be fraudulent or invalid after you take the exam, your scores will be canceled and your test fee forfeited. If you are taking the exam at a test center, the administrator will take your palm scan, signature, and photograph using digital equipment.
The testing rooms are also equipped with audio and video recorders, which are active during the exam. If you do not complete the entire check-in process or refuse to be recorded, you will not be allowed to take the GMAT, and your test fee will be forfeited.
