Watch out for low voltage wires, though. A lot of newer cars are running 3v accessories and 3v is not enough to run your RD on. Usuall 3v wires are very noticable too, as they're much smaller than all the others in the bundle. Makesure your power source is switched off with the ignition so your RD goes off when you stop the engine. Hope this helps Reason: Bad typing Get a shared fuse connector Autozone, etc , find a switched 12v 7. December 31st, Good advice Probably better than my splicing-in technique A shared fuse connector that fits into your fuse box and provides a hot terminal to which the hot usually red wire will connect.
They're neat and professional looking, and you don't have to worry too much about it pulling loose. Then, find a good ground for the negative wire and you should be good to go. Great, thanks for the replies, I will go the fuse connector route.
How about hiding the wires? I figure I will probablly have to run the wire up and under the cloth lid, over to the left side panel, inside it, and down. I have an 08' Dodge Avenger, has anyone installed it like that before in one of these?
Or is this where the install really starts to become complicated? I drive a Honda, and ran my wire from the fuse box near my left knee up the A-pillar then across the headliner towards the top center of the windshield just left of the rear view mirror. Fortunately for me, my car had an unused, switched fuse socket so I didn't have to piggyback on anything else. If your car has side curtain airbags, there may be other steps you need to take to make sure your wire doesn't get in the way of anything important, and to ensure everything goes back together properly.
On the Honda, it involved using a rubber mallet in a specific place to disengage a plastic locking pin that held the A-pillar in place. This pin was NOT reusable, and had to be replaced with a dealer part. Had I not researched this beforehand, I likely would have broken the A-pillar cover since I assumed that it would have just popped right off like my former car.
I used zip ties to secure the wire to the existing harness in the A-pillar, and was extra careful to ensure that the wire was routed in such a way that it would not interfere with the airbag igniter. Do your homework and be careful! It can be extraordinarily helpful to subscribe to an enthusiast forum for your particular car, since topics like these seem to come up often.
If you're really lucky, someone has already documented their own install with photos. Originally Posted by AntiGravityHero. January 4th, I made my own ix hanger bracket for my C6 Corvette.
